BYRNA PRODUCT DESIGN OBJECTIVES
1. COMPACT AND CONCEALABLE
The biggest challenge was to design sufficient stopping power within a compact form factor. It was imperative for the launcher to be easily storable in a glove box, purse, backpack or jacket pocket. Ensuring quick access during critical moments of need.
2. NEED TO STOP OR SUBDUE AN ASSAILANT
The goal was to give ordinary citizens the ability to subdue, disable and deter a would-be assailant without causing permanent injury or death. Numerous test were done on different chemical irritant powders to develop the current range of projectiles.
3. TO BE READY TO DEPLOY AT A MOMENT’S NOTICE
Byrna developed its patented first-shot, pull-pierce technology. This allows the CO2 canister to remain in the launcher, unpunctured, until needed. When the trigger is pulled, in fire mode, the CO2 cylinder is punctured and the projectile is fired simultaneously. This technology allows the Byrna to always be in a ready state.
4. DISTANCE EQUALS SAFETY
The Byrna launchers’ effective accuracy is 12m on a 15cm target and 20m on a 45cm target. Distance provides the opportunity for time, time offers a range of options and having options allows you the necessary time to make crucial decisions, ultimately leading to your safety.
5. SHOULD BE EASY TO OPERATE
The goal was to create a self-defense device that could be employed effectively by a wide range of individuals, regardless of their familiarity with firearms or other weapons. The design team focused on intuitive controls, a straightforward loading mechanism and clear visual indicators.
6. TO BUILD A QUALITY PRODUCT
The Byrna products are sophisticated pieces of engineering. Traditional handguns have approximately 35 parts, the Byrna SD has more than 110 parts.
Byrna pistols and rifles go through various quality control steps to assure quality before the product is qualified and signed off.
